The difference between a puzzle and a mystery is that a puzzle can be completed after all the pieces are uncovered and understood. That is to say, there is a singular answer to a particular situation. Meanwhile, a mystery has no determined endpoint in understanding. There are pieces, but we may never create a final work of art from those pieces. They are more likely to create an abstract mess that we must analyze and apply critical thinking to find a best guess answer.
A puzzle is likened to a crime committed with witnesses, the perpetrator might have gotten away at first, but all of the information is available to the investigators. Once they conduct their interviews, review relevant video feeds, and gather evidence, the puzzle will come to a head, and arrests and, ultimately, convictions can occur.
A mystery is more like hearing a rumor at the water cooler. There will be pieces everywhere you turn, different parts of information from different sources, but none will be exactly the same.
